Unlocked Apple iPhone in HK

Does anyone know where to buy an unlocked Apple iPhone in HK and how much the cost would be. I checked with 3HK, but apparently they only sell it together with a plan, not the handset alone.

Sin Tat in Mongkok have them, last check was around HK$9000. They may have come down a little since then.

I looked into this as well.

For the moment the price of an unlocked 3G iphone will cost you:
1: the price of the phone
2: the price of the plan term period and/or break costs (about equal to full term costs).
3: unlock cost
4: profit for whoever bothers to got through all of this for you.

So unless you want to drop that amount of cash for a new 3G iphone, and then add your own 3G network plan costs to it - it may just be easier to go with the 3 network here in HK.

yeah but who wants to be stuck with the same phone for 2 years with a crappy 2mb camera (theres no excuse for this Apple!!! - you made your name in multimedia) ...when you know they will upgrade it within 12 months....cos then you'll have an old phone for another year.

Plus the fact that if you're a gwai-lo like me you're probably gonna get pissed and leave it in the back of a cab at some point... which means you have to carry on paying the 2 year plan for a phone you don't have or pay the full price for a replacment phone.

All in all these 2 year deals suck.

Best off sticking to iphone 2g as there's still very little between them - how often do you REALLY need 3g capability.... which is normally when ur watching youtube vids... if you're downloading websites that are mostly text based then 2g is still fine. Also Apple still don't have any support for flash movies... they only get around the Youtube problem by playing it through Quicktime.

Also just to let you know that secondhand 2g Iphone prices are now rising rapidly due to the above reasons.

I think the 3G phone is great, and I use the 3G network all the time, surfing, checking emails etc... The faster network speeds are certainly noticable. Very rarely you may not be able to get a 3G signal, which is when the phone switches to the 2.5g network and speeds are painfully slow.

I have an unlocked iphone which I use with smarttone. Smarttone have a special deal whereby you get unlimited data for just 108HKD per month (I think its unofficial, you have to go into the store and talk to them and they will then offer it to you). I Don't have a restrictive 2 year contract. Can go back and forth to the UK as I please and switch sim cards.
