I am looking to move to Bangkok next academic year. I am an international school teacher and it looks as if I will have a position at one of the international schools in Bangkok next year.
My wife will be coming with me and she would like to do some volunteer work. She doesn't really mind what she does - she is a qualified dental nurse. She would be happy to work at a hospital, with the poor, teaching English - basically anything.
Would you be able to recommend any volunteer organisations in Bangkok that we could get in contact with?
Have you found an answer to this yet? I've just moved to BK as well with my husband who is working here. I have only been here a about a month, but seems that the best way to find voluteer opportunities is through the Women's clubs. I contacted the American Women's Club (since I'm American) which is welcome to anybody & they have many volunteer programs.
I know there is a very active Aussie/NZ Women's club as well. The Assie/NZ club actually puts out a book that every told me to get, "Bangkok Guide, the essential guide to living in Bangkok" 17th edition. It is loaded with good information, I have used it a lot. Hopefully you can find a copy before you arrive.
I was told by a woman that I met that since there are so many expat wives here, it can be difficult to find volunteer work. But I would think with your wife's experience as a dental nurse, she might have as much trouble.
I would recommend her joining a Women's group as soon as she gets here. When we lived in Hong Kong I did not do this & I was very sorry that I waited so long before doing it. I think it would have made the adventure a better one (not that it was bad).
Good luck & hope this was helpful
feel free to contact me at jbhubbell@aol.com
I'm Thai. But now I move to Shanghai as my husband is expat here. Therefore, I totally understand the feeling of how to be expat. This is my first time to join this www. and I would prefer to visit as much as I can.
It is very difficult to find the volunteer work in Bangkok unless u join the clubs as jbhubbell mentioned. However, would u like to consider to work as the part time job in the hospital? There are many well known private hospitals/ dental clinics in Bangkok.
If your wife can put herself in the job and she doesn't like it, she still can ask the suggestion from the doctor about how to find the volunteer work. I'm sure this is gonna be one of the channel to find the volunteer work.
I also sure that Thai people is nice they really want to help your guys. The problem is they cannot speak English well. Trust me!!!!!!
I would suggest u to settle your life as fast as u can. The volunteer and / or part time job can be step further.
BTW, what is the name of the school u may get a chance to work with?
I'll be back to Bangkok in this Christmas.. I miss my home town soooomuch!!!!
I am going to be working at the New International School of Thailand, which is located downtown near Asok station.
The idea of getting a part time position at a hospital or dentist does sound interesting. Won't my wife need to speak Thai to get one of these positions?
